How to Create a Successful Resume Layout by Hand

The first thing to say about CV layout is do not put the words “Résumé” or “Curriculum Vitae” on the top of your CV. Quite apart from insulting reader – what else could this document be? – It is a waste of valuable space.

At the top of the first page of your CV, put your full name (or the name you wish to be known by). Leave plenty of space below this heading, before you list your personal contact details. Give also your address, telephone and mobile numbers, and e-mail. Make easy to reach you!

CV Layout and Headings

Headings on your CV layout must be consistent in appearance. They must all be the same font and size. Making the same type of headings look the same is easier to reader see the separate sections.

White Space & Grouping

You must leave plenty of white space on your CV. If you put too much writing on a page, your CV layout will be hard to read and look cluttered. You should also allow a generous margin on all sides.

White spaces can be used to indicate that things close to each other belong together. The size of the gaps tells the reader that the things close together are all related. The larger gap indicates to the reader they are moving on to some different type of information.

Resume Layout Font

Basic rule: use the same font throughout and give preference to standards fonts like Arial, Times New Roman, etc.

CV and Bullets Points

Bullet points are quick and easy to read, and look attractive on the page, as long as there are not too many of them. The risk with bullet points is that people tend to be too brief and the bullet point becomes meaningless. Then, if you are going to use bullet points, make sure that they are meaningful.

Writing complete sentences allows you to show off your communication skills if your spelling and grammar are good.

Other Important Resume Layout & Presentation Issues

Here are some other points to keep in mind about a good CV layout:

  • Do not use both sides of the paper. People may forget to photocopy or scan both sides.
  • You must have your CV laser-printed. Using old and cheaper printers is not acceptable now that high-quality laser printers are commonly available.
  • Use high-quality white paper (other colours may not scan or copy well).
  • Avoid sending photocopies, but if you are going to do it, ensure that the quality of the copy is indistinguishable from an original.
  • Do not fold your CV – use an envelope.
